I landed up on Cone, on my quest to find a text-mode 'e-mail client' which
can do the following:
1. Directly interact with my ISP's SMTP server (I can't burden my laptop
with sendmail, exim, postfix, and so on).
2. Have inbuilt support for POP3/IMAP protocols (so I dont have to
configure/run fetchmail) and built-in *sane* editor/composer.
3. Provide me a highly-usable interface, with least learning curve. I
gave up on mutt for its complex configuration scheme, bizarre
keyboard-shortcuts (of course, its configurable), and way too many features
than I can handle, and a not-so-intuitive UI. I'm sure 'mutt-freaks' will
want to flame me on this one ;-)
From the usability point of view, cone's interface somewhat resembles pine,
but it seems to be a superset of pine, in terms of features.
I hardly used elm, but I found it remind me of lynx web browser (I use
'links' for web browsing).
I'm still figuring out certain things on Cone (need to find out how to
configure threaded message display and so on).
In terms of resource usage, its a little bulky when compared to
mutt/pine/elm (using up 4.9 MB on my box). But I guess its a compromise
for not having to run MTA and fetchmail on my machine.
