Hi Dave, Kevin, Shannon:

Looking at a few of the User-group threads on panelization, I have seen no
reference whatsoever to the Cadence ObjectCAM tool. It's primary purpose is to
enable panelization and other documentation typical of post process data
outputs. This is a tool built right into the Allegro engine; although, there
may be a slight up-charge to acquire the activated feature. An ObjectCAM
detailed panel is a slightly modified .brd file which contains multiple
instances of the individual PCB (pcb.brd file). The PCBs can be rotated,
mirrored if so required for mixed arrays, and may also contain other pcbx.brd
images.

I am surprised that Cadence has not provided information about these tools to
Customers that are inquiring about this capability. Mentor Graphics is robust
on this aspect of CAD design, so that should create incentive alone. But then
again some things may not be widely supported in order to achieve higher
priority solutions, such as silicon-package-board robustness along with the
remarkable use of Constraint management and tightly integrated simulation
capabilities. But I bet if you Ask, it will be shown to you. Perhaps a Cadence
A.E. will be motivated to provide a Webinar specifically about ObjectCam for
all of those needing to construct panelized arrays in-house. Unfortunately, for
the sake of in-house panelization needs, an estimated 95%, of the Cadence-CAD
users do not necessarily require in-house panelization, so perhaps it has not
received enough grass-roots attention as a significant priority item.

We require this capability in some aspects of our business, so it is an
important feature to provide. ObjectCam has been around at least 18 months now
and from what I understand has been further enhanced from the first time we
have seen a demonstration of its functionality. We are not active users of
ObjectCAM at this moment so cannot respond first hand on the specifics of
functionality; however, it is in our best interest to be fully apprised of all
CAD vendor's latest capabilities, as well as the shortfalls. If more
people/companies would do this in earnest, the bar would continue to be raised
for the CAD vendors performance. Ultimately, the CAD vendors will be compelled
to over-come their deficiencies in order to hold their market share of eligible
customers or else that market share will be taken by the vendor that, can and
does, deliver what the customer wants.

Sincerely yours,

Michael Baumstark

An alternative:

On the fab drawing, have a note that says "Vendor to panelize as shown
in "Detail X"." Then draw how you would like pcb panelized.
Showing only the detail necessary for the correct orientation and overall
panel size, etc.... Don't show the copper/silkscreen/etc.

The board outline can be stepped and repeated in a pattern and changed to
a different layer for manipulation of break away tabs, external tooling holes
and whatever.

This gets around the problems of having multiple routed PCBs in the same
database.

Hope this helps.

I have inquired to cadence about this issue. And have submitted request for
them to look at incorporating this into their software.

We achieve panelization by exporting a IDF (PTC) file from allegro for use in
PRO/Engineer. After importing this into Pro/Engineer We add the necessary webs
and tabs etc. It is a fairly easy process.

After consulting with the fab house they prefer to have this information in the
odb++ file that we send them, but unfortunately since allegro doesn't allow
this they create their step and repeat in accordance with our drawing. We have
developed a good relationship with our fab houses in order to determine the max
panel size / board ratio etc.

We just had a query about this last week.

There are no panelization tools in Allegro (at least none I

know of). Normally I, and I think many of us, use the board house

to panelize our designs. If you really wish to do the panelization

yourself you should get a gerber editor such as Gerbtool. It

will have all of the tools necessary to create whatever panel

sizes and configurations you need.

Good luck,
