Subject: [PCB_FORUM] Re: Mentor Graphic

Nope, sorry, Mentor BS only takes the place and route functions from Exp.
You'll still need all the other niceties like:

1) on the schematic or the layout can be worked on at any time, or else
you have an 'outta sync' design... TROUBLE!

Big deal, simply run to_layout... not that big a problem... don't forget to
back annotate first.

2) creation of gerbers is painful!

Not hardly... although whomever wrote the default menus obviously never did a
PWB... but there are some odd glitches in Cadence too... such as the fact that
they JUST put in drill charts in version 15... com'on a major too coming up
with that this late in the game... I had $1000 DOS tools that did that in the
late '80's.

3) Changes? OUCH!

As long as they are driven from the schematic... no problem. And are fill in
torMentor is loads faster.

4) Creating uVia drill drawings... PAINFUL!

Cadence doesn't even know the rules for microvias...

5) Place and route WITHOUT BoardstationRE... PAINFUL!
etc. etc. etc.

Well the lack of push and shove in BS is rather laughable... but then so is the
fact that there are no component to component rules by class in Cadence. I
have yet to see a perfect tool, and in fact am quite disappointed by the actual
tools that exist today in the industry.

Seasoned PWB designers MUST customize the heck out of their tools to be really
efficient at the tool, thus a designer moving between jobs may end up seeing a
different configuration (especially true of Mentor with Ample and changeable
menus). Loads of time is spent by designers customizing the tools, some
features are then lost as upgrades occur... causing lost time and frustration.

UIs in both tools is laughable... one look at something like Adobe
illustrator, or Corel Draw or AutoCAD shows examples of far better menus... and
the wonderful ability to "copy properties."

And what about Graphics... Neither Mentor nor Cadence allows a designer to see
height issues... cheezy little Protel at least does this... Nope, you have to
buy a major third party tool like Pro-E for something every little $59 computer
game does dynamically.

Nah... the major EDA tools simply work the designers to the bone, and then rape
the suits for a check... it is disgusting.

You begin to see why I wouldn't settle for anything less than $125K/yr!

I heard much the same from many Mentor designers. Rather than being able to
deliver fast quality designs... corporations are having to pay for "privilege"
of "torturing" designers. But again... there ain't no perfect tools.

Good day.
