First of all, the message "may be corrupted" means just that - "may"
and this is a very weak "may". In most cases it merely means that some
of the document's internal status information is inconsistent, which
is completely harmless. The only time when this warning is substantial
is if you had a crash or some sort of serious error while editing it
because then the unexpected status information indicates that the app
has not got round to completely updating or formatting the docment. In
all other cases it just points to sloppy code somewhere.

The * typically appears when the document is updated after being
loaded, e.g., if you have a date field in it.

I am not aware of EasiWriter automatically loading backup files. As
far as I know when you load a file then exactly that file is loaded
and nothing else.
