[icon-discuss] Re: External stereo microphone discovery

Cathy,

It just happens that the Olympus mikes use what is known as phantom power. For
the
record, this is 3 volts. The olympus recorders use this same 3 volts phantom
power for its mikes.

If your Canadian mikes use phantom power at 3 volts, it will work with the
Braille
Plus or the Olympus.

Because of the method that the Olympus mikes use to obtain stereo, they are
extremely
subject to wind, even light breezes. In fact, it is difficult to find a mike
which will
successfully work in breezy conditions, except where the mike 1s designed to
remove bass
frequencies below perhaps 150 Hz.

I have been unable to find a halfway-decent stereo mike using 3 volts. The two
phantom power standards that I know of are 12 volts or 48 volts. Even so, I
have not
found mikes using those standards as stereo mikes. It is possible to obtain
good results with
two closely-spaced mikes, but this is beyond the scope of this list. I'd be
willing to go
into this off list.
