All the ways IASL members around the world are responding to this crisis is
amazing and heartwarming. It also shows just how we have so many things that
are the same while we have other differences: customs, colors, countries. What
will work for our students in one country will be effective 3000 miles away in
another. One of the great things about our list is the way we are sharing news
and suggestions for our students.
Our children are all being faced with similar concerns: locked out of their
schools, not being able to play with others. Even those who are older must be
very worried at this strange possible illness, a virus, that is so easy to
catch but impossible to see. Trying to keep calm is difficult for everyone, but
some attention needs to be given to any less obvious concerns our children may
have because they do not understand. They need to know that it is a bug that
they need to be very careful to kill by keeping their hands clean, by staying
away from others outside their homes who may not be paying attention to washing
their hands (which is why their schools are closed), and if they are coughing
or have trouble breathing, they need to tell their parents immediately.
If you have any ideas about how to help children understand exactly what this
virus is in age appropriate words, could you please share those. They must be
as frightened as we are with much less ability to understand.
It is unfortunate that our conference is postponed. I look forward to seeing
many of you in Denton in 2021.

A group of school librarians and I are working on a multicultural, multilingual
educational repository for children and students (4 - 18 years) who are
receiving home schooling because of this crisis. Could you please send me the
list of translations which you have received (and if possible, a link). I
would like to add this to the repository.

Dear colleagues,
I am reaching out to you all in my current role at the Australian Library and
Information Association (ALIA), with a somewhat urgent request.
ALIA are providing support to libraries - particularly public libraries - in
the form of communication resources for our multicultural communities.
We are looking to provide wording / signage that communicate the following
phrases:
'For health reasons, the library building is closed until further notice.'
'For health reasons, the library building is closed until [date].
'All programs and events have been cancelled.'
'Some programs and events have been cancelled.'
'Please see our Facebook page for more information.'
'Please see our website for more information and to use our online services.'
We have received a specific request for translations of these phrases into
Chinese, Hindi and Nepali. However, it is our goal to try to collate a list of
resources in as many languages as possible.
ALIA aims to make these resources available on Monday 23 March (AEDT), so we
would dearly appreciate any contributions ASAP, but ideally by CoB (your time)
on Friday 20 March. (If you don't see this until the weekend, then we'll still
accept late contributions, as we can continue to build these resources through
the week.) Please send your translations to me directly at:
