Hi Al,

Thank you so far. @Ian: Maybe it would possible to put such a conversation
thing into the game? I think that could be interesting for some map packs.
One thing I asked is about more than one sentence for a unit in general. That
means, if some maps have units that react on some events like if they are
attacked or such with comments and stuff like that? Or can they only speak the
one sentence if the cursor is above them?

Best regards
Niklas

Hi Niklas, welcome to the list!

I understand what you are talking about. I was sighted for the most part of my
life and played games taht did exactly like your talking about. That kind of
thing is up to Ian who made this fantastic game engine. Something that would
trigger a "conversation" between units would be really interesting. I don't
know of any map pack that does this kind of thing as of yet, but I think it is
a good idea, especially for interactions between, say, an NPC character and the
player's characters.

There is a few ways to make those "foley" sounds for movement.
one way is to put the sound on the terrain file itself, so that the sound
changes according to the terrain. my zombie map does that. It has diffrent
sounds for stepping on cement, driveway, the patio, grass etc.
I think other maps do that too for the most part.

The other way is to put the sound of moving in a skill that moves the unit.
This works to a certain extent if you want everything to sound the same as it
moves.
Another way is to add the unit's name to the movement sound file so that
diffrent units sound diffrent when walking. I think Craig's Commandand Conquer
map does this.

I am not sure if I missed anything there, but that is about all I can come up
with. I hope that helps you out.

  Subject: [ian-reeds-games] a question/suggestion regarding maps

  Hello guys,

I am new to this list but I read it for a while. I have an idea for map packs
in general. It’s a question, too, since I am playing only the stable
TB-versions at the moment. I have heart it often in mainstream strategy games,
that the units can speak more than one sentence. They say something if the
cursor is above them but in mainstream games the units react with comments and
such in a lot of other situations. Sometimes they talk to each other if
something happened. They say things if they need ammo, help or in other
difficult situations. Some of them taunt the enemies and sometimes the enemies
react to it. I hope you know what I mean. This could make the maps even more
interesting, I think. In mainstream games, they do this even in turn based
ones, like in jagged aliance II. Or has anyone made such things already in a
map pack? And a special moving sound could be another suggestion as well, so
the game could use another sound for moving like food steps and such than the
cursor sound. Please let me know if this suggestions already have been
implemented in a map pack, I would be interested. I hope I explained well what
I mean, if not, please ask me and I’ll try it again.
  Thanks in advance.
  Best regards
  Niklas
