Under xev, is it normal that I get two different key codes for Super_L,
namely 0x85 and 0xce?

Not sure what's wrong, but I get the same keycodes for Super_L as you
do when running xmodmap. I get the same output for xev also (keycode
133) when pressing Left Super.
I use the super/win keys on i3, works fine over here.
