I have an Averatec 3250 and have tried a variety of distros on it. Knoppix
loads well, but for the minimal amount of work getting wireless drivers and
acpi functionality Ubuntu worked out of box. Well, almost out of box.
Ubuntu Breezy Badger had poor acpi functionality as the fan would "stop"
after awhile and it would get hot enough for it to shutdown... very bad with
a laptop. However, Dapper Drake (1.06 LTS) worked completely out of box.
The only changing I've done in config files was so it doesn't lock the
screen when the lid is shut (personal preference). I've heard that
1.10works as well, but I haven't gotten around to upgrading to it yet.
I'm pleased with Ubuntu on my laptop as I need it to "just work" and it
seems to do just that. I seem to get about 30 minuets more battery life
when running in Linux than when I"m running in Windows. I haven't let my
computer sit to see for sure, but I've noticed this while just doing some
web surfing. Possibly because I don't need to have
anti-virus/firewall/anti-spyware/etc running in addition to everything else.
