Later this week, young voters across the state will see whether Governor
Sununu keeps his promise to them when he will finally decide to either sign
or veto the voter suppression bill, HB 1264. Late last year, Sununu said he
“hates” this modern day poll tax and that he would “never support anything
that would suppress the student vote.” Despite this promise, the governor
hinted that the bill would be “hard not to sign, to be honest” if the NH
Supreme Court would do what it just did, ruling HB 1264 as constitutional.
Even though the Supreme Court deemed this bill constitutional, Sununu must
still veto this bill. Historical and contemporary examples teach us that
just because something is constitutional does not mean that it is right.
Regardless of what the court says, it is clear to see that its passage is
harmful and immoral.
The sole purpose of a poll tax is to limit the electorate and stack the
cards in the favor of politician holding office. Such a practice is an
affront to ethics, but then again, the governor has shown that ethics is
not a concern in his administration. Siding with special interests,
nominating his unqualified cronies to significant positions, and failing to
swiftly condemn harmful policies and rhetoric of President Trump are just
some pieces of evidence that highlight the governor’s disregard for doing
the right thing. And after looking at his long and storied record promoting
and supporting voter fraud lies, it’s really no surprise that Governor
Sununu is leaning towards signing it.
Because a bill’s constitutionality does not determine its moral rightness,
the Supreme Court’s decision that HB1264 is constitutional does not mean
that is should be signed into law. It will pervert what should be a free
and fair election cycle.
The Governor has shown that he will only ignore the advice of his corporate
sponsors when he it is politically expedient. That’s why we have to work
together to make him vetoing this bill the politically expedient choice.
Call Governor Sununu today (603) 271-2121 and urge him to say no to HB
1264. Call today, before it’s too late.

As I'm sure you've all seen, the NH Supreme Court just ruled 3-2 that the
voter restriction bill HB 1264 is constitutional, paving the way for
Governor Sununu to sign this terrible bill into law.
I'll be highlighting the details of this tomorrow during the normal LTE
email but today I wanted to see if anyone would be willing to sign onto an
LTE that we've drafted, so we get our response out to local papers quickly.
