1. I had my water heater replaced in 2009 and an expansion tank was
installed. I'm not sure that anyone would want to install an expansion
tank on their existing builder's grade water heater, since the water
heater is beyond the end of its life.
2. You could have an expansion tank installed with your existing
builder's grade water heater, but there is no requirement to do so. In
fact, you would add more value to your home by replacing your 17 year
old water heater. It's well past its life expectancy, so consider
yourself lucky that it lasted this long. An expansion talk will
automatically be installed with its replacement if done by a licensed
plumber or reputable handyman.
3. If anyone replaced their water heater around 2007 or later without
adding an expansion tank, then the job was done incorrectly.

Good morning all,
We recently had our home inspected and had a question regarding our water
heater and missing expansion tank and valve.
I have attached a picture with a brief description - here are some of my
questions.
1. Has anyone had a thermal expansion tank and valve installed on their
existing water heater?
2. Is it even possible to outfit an existing water heater with a thermal
expansion tank without replacing the entire water heater?
3. Has anyone replaced their water heater in the past several years and NOT
installed an expansion tank and valve with the unit?
