Hi Lauri and everyone!

OK, I'm jumping in! I was going to write this privately to Lauri, as
it's kind of long,
but maybe it would be of interest to the group.

What's the deal about homeschoolers taking part in credit bearing
activities in a school? I had been under the impression that according
to regulations, they couldn't, ( #11, #12, and #19 in the Questions and
Answers section of the regulations.) That they could only take part in
extracurricular activities. Is it up to the individual school district?
A music teacher in Holland Patent explained to me once that homeschooled
kids couldn't participate in band because it's a half credit course. ( I
don't remember why we were having the conversation, because I'd never
intended my children to do any activities in the school.) But I've
occasionally heard of homeschoolers in other districts participating in
band. Would that be because in those schools, they don't give a credit
for band? Is that something that one school would consider credit
bearing, and another school would consider extracurricular? ( I would
have thought that would be consistent within all public schools.) Also,
what about BOCES classes? They'd have to be considered credit bearing,
wouldn't they? And I know of at least two homeschoolers who attend
BOCES.

This does have a bearing on a situation that we're in right now. My
daughter has taken private flute lessons for years, and by the scores she
received in the Solofest in the spring, she qualified for and wanted to
be considered for Area All-State Festival in November. According to
NYSSMA rules, ( New York State School Music Association) any student,
including homeschooled, has to participate in a certain amount of school
music programs to be considered for the Festival. I believe that NYSSMA
is a private organization, but supported by the school districts(!) I
wrote a letter to their representative in this area, and asked if that
rule could be waived, as Holland Patent doesn't allow such participation,
and was told that the NYSSMA rule stands, and it was an issue between us
and our school district. I've been told there have been homeschoolers
who have participated in Area All-State, and must have participated in
their school's music programs, that's why I'm wondering about the above
questions.

Does anyone have any input or knowledge about any of this?

Thanks, Ellen Roczen
