This is what I set in my mail client,
Settings -> Filters -> Create a new filter
Create a fitler
Has the words: listid: gcc-patches.gcc.gnu.org
Mails from mail list are moved to a folder, say 'gcc-patches', while
mails from sender to you directly will stay in your inbox. You have
two identical mail in two folders, one is from mail list, and the
other is from sender directly.
I am using it everything, and it works well.
