No, no, no.

Is Linux really GPL Linux as Richard Stallman might claim? Which file system should it run? Where do you want your libraries? What kind of installer do you want? What about QTopia and other embedded environments? Historically Linux was created as a free version of Minix which was a demonstration OS. The whole idea on Linux as just a kernel is to invite it to run in different hardware environments through customisation. The problem is how do you customise? Edit the kernel config yourself and recompile à la BSD? I know most users get stuck at working out how big /var, etc. should be let alone what "things they don't need to pack" ie. support for 386, ISA, etc. Nothing should be put in the way of a distribution released optimised for home use: no web/mail server, single X client.

Cogent arguments about scheduling and modularity: let the kernel be told a little about it's environment so it knows what to optimise for. BeOS did this very well and Linux still sucks at it for some of the reasons listed in the article. That said I don't think the article gave much reason to trust the code released by the guy, although that might not be so important.

Viva Haiku!
