The startup requirements -- particularly dependencies between potentially optional components -- are complex even on a desktop system. A simple solution like a single startup script just leaves the burden of dealing with the complexities with the user. Besides, starting things on demand can't even be done that way.
+1. I still remember when I had to resort to ugly hacks trying to auto-start a media application and make it wait until the media server was actually ready for applications to connect and create nodes.
Ralf, I think you need to exit your reality distortion field and stop seeing beauty in Haiku where there is just missing functionality. And while you are at it, there a quite a few more things you could be realistic about.
