Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this what was handled with the
option "View | Stretch to window" (badly named IMO and translated as
"Ansicht | Fenstergröße beibehalten" as a compromise to "Bildgröße
anpassen und Fenstergröße beibehalten"...)?
At least the behaviour with that option enabled did what you describe.
Making that default behaviour is maybe a good idea. But that would
either mean to remove the menu item or implement what the English
description suggests: stretch smaller images to the window size.
At the moment small images are always stretched: with the option
activated they are stretched to the window size, as expected.
Deactivated however, they are stretched as well, just not to the window
border. (See attached 32x32 up.png)
