On the other hand: * Opening the desktop in a window is a potentially destructive operation. It would lead the user to press CMD+shift+K or something like this to try to get a sensible layout icon in that window and locate the file. But this can mess with the desktop layout * It needs some tricks to make sure the window opens with reasonable size and location, maybe does not use the default background, etc. The pure spatial mode answer is that there should be no files on the desktop, only volumes (matching the behavior of / in the FS hierarchy). However, this definitely clashes with the pragmatic view. As a result, I'm not happy with any of the solutions and I don't know what to do. -- Adrien.
