 I think you mean gcc4, because it compiles fine on gcc2 here, but I get
 the same error as you on gcc4 (which I hadn't tried out before, oops).

 I removed the erroneous static qualifier from the function definition in
 lock.cpp and verified that it works on gcc2 and gcc4. Weird that gcc2
 didn't issue a warning...

 Attaching version 3 of the patch, which now also compiles with gcc4.
