I think the icon size may already scale automatically with HiDPI? Or was
 that just in Tracker list views?

 List view scales along font size AFAIK. The default desktop icon size
 should too. Better than blindly set the default size. Someone on 1152x864
 wants smaller icons than another running at 1920x1080.
