 Would it make more sense to just have a kind of "SocketHolder" class which
 takes care of acquiring/releasing references as needed, so that we do not
 have to worry about all these reference-counting bugs? (Does that already
 exist and is it just not being used here?) That sounds like the cleanest
 and best solution.
