Apologies in advance if this is too much, but a couple of questions were
asked, so we put this short pamphlet together to explain the voting options
and the process.
Long story short, as part of the 3DPPGH mission we'd like to have as many
people with their own printers as possible, to have their own mini factory
in their home. To this end we've put together a "Build Day" (think of this
like one of our HackPGH Classes) where participants will come and build
their own 3D Printer and leave with it. The will have not only online help,
but a physical place they can come to every month and share tips and get
help face to face. We have had decent interest but wanted to make sure
everyone knew that this isn't only for people who have been showing up to
3DPPGH, but it's open to all. As a few people around the shop have
mentioned building their own printers, we just wanted to make sure everyone
knew what was up.
The spreadsheet was a little complex, with lots of information so we've
distilled it down into a handy document. Any questions, fire away.
Also, yes, before the inevitable questions, part of the main concern was
affordability. If you want the best kit possible right now, go with the
Prusa i3 MK2, and certainly there are some sacrifices to meet affordability
goals, but we're trying to spread the love and the hobby as far and wide as
possible. We certainly will be doing this again in the future, as well as
other printer based build days (astroprint, enclosures, etc.), but without
a printer these are all mute.
