I had a computer crash and thought I had lost the first email -- otherwise I wouldn't have sent 2...
Hope you find something...

Hi -- I don't know if it works well with general Word files, but the narrator program that comes in Windows XP and perhaps other versions of windows will do a reasonable job of reading text and even menus (although you wouldn't need that for proofreading).
To run narrator, I think you can go to "run" on the start menu and then type "narrator"
After you start it up, try calling up the help file for info.
Take care. I know there must be better solutions than narrator, which is known not be be great, but it is free and part of Windows, so it's worth a try.
Take care.

I received a request for a lead to a "free" program that would read word files aloud
in a fairly decent voice. The request was for proof reading purposes, to see how the
file sounded, and not for general screen reading purposes. Can anyone suggest such a
program? I told the person of text aloud which, though not free, did seem to fit the
bill. Any other suggestions?
