hi everyone, my name is Vanessa, no relation to the brilliant google girl, I am totally blind after losing my sight 13 years ago to diabetes, am married to Steve who is almost blind with retinitus pigmentosa, he has a small bit of peripheral vision and also has a muscle wasting problem which affects balance, I have been a Guide user for 2years and have been in touch with some users either on skype or the phone so thought that I should share some good news, last Wednesday Steve qualified with his assistance dog, Scott, they have a great bond, he is like a guide dog but does a few extra things such as fetching things for Steve, picking up dropped items, he has been trained to open the front door and if there is an automatic door then Scott pushes the button, in time he can be trained to help him with household tasks and the putting on and taking off of shoes and clothing when Steve's muscle wastage gets worse, we lead as normal life as possible, although we have some sighted help we don't have carers, life is busy with lots of outside interess and with 8 grandkids it is better than some people with disabilities have, please get in touch if you want, life is for living and it's fun to talk, ta ta for now, Vanessa, Steve and Scott
