A Sad Day Indeed

On Wednesday of last week Deborah White brought me some very sad news-Dr.
Melissa Fincher, GADOE Deputy Superintendent for Assessment and Accountability,
has indicated that she will retire the end of December. Melissa Fincher is one
of the truly great heroes of Georgia public education. She has fought to do
what is right in the assessment and accountability measures for ALL of the
students in Georgia schools. Her tireless efforts have not been easy-she has
the hardest job in Georgia public education and that is evidenced by the
volleys of criticism she has received from school systems, school leaders, and
even members of the State Board of Education and me. Doing what is right often
draws fire, especially when folks do not want to accept the consequences of
their own actions.   Throughout it all Melissa has acted with poise and
composure, even in the most difficult circumstances. She has never been too
busy to offer anyone a helping hand.

Dr. Melissa Fincher will be sorely missed-it will take two or three full time
people to do all that she does. She has never veered from her commitment to the
children of Georgia and that level of commitment is rare these days. We wish
her the very best in her retirement; she certainly has earned it. My sincere
hope is that some of our young, emerging leaders will do for Georgia public
schools what Melissa Fincher done. From all of us, thank you Melissa-we are far
better for what you have done.

The 2017 G-CASE Fall Conference presents Everyday HEROES - Highly Effective
Resources and Opportunities for Exceptional Students!  Learn about partnering
with community resources, agencies and other stakeholders to meet the needs of
the whole child and improve the graduation rates of students with disabilities.

Keynote presenters include Dr. Tim Elmore, author of Generation iY: Secrets to
Connecting with Today's Teens & Young Adults in the Digital Age. Dr. Elmore
uses his expertise on Generations Y and Z to equip educators and others to
impart practical life and leadership skills to young adults to help them
navigate through life.  He is the founder of Growing Leaders, a non-profit
Atlanta-based organization dedicated to developing leadership in young adults.

Mr. Brian Mendler, author of That One Kid, a book that provides educators with
easy to use strategies for preventing and responding to difficult, disruptive,
defiant and unmotivated behavior.  Mr. Mendler teaches from a unique
prospective - that of a former student who struggled with a learning disability
and severe ADHD.  Educators love his seminars because he is able to provide
strategies that work immediately for today's youth.

New results from the nation's most widely used college admission test highlight
in detailed fashion the persistent achievement gaps between students who face
disadvantages and those who don't.

Scores from the
ACT<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0014qhQ1L148JKsEJzcKC0aAKUNeO3UKiC__6sb6cERQn9mYgTkD4eQVThYqsNJF6XKFSV05VDg0eiFry20bbRH_Kqr0aPlioXmkq1euRM-j8JHSOK2Z-V4-QKfvDJBM2SLDuDl901tKO_pDKCNx_WtTUa-uSoCH3RexWKkfJTwdty39-OW53pYP43syzzO4ra0o3nI98fd0N49UUzpExlU9EFqbXmplK1OXgwajNn25SFSkrUxOdavB1tYFjSnh-UghwJRYo5gb7CdtATQA3kCTA==&c=zVMqgBPQ_3ut6Vr9TqAFMzBTAsz1njqQlBFW3cHZDvrY8Utx2XXzNw==&ch=4e2Zkb2QE1X1oohs6z9NJmDK6RKhYBIXCqblaliyHxtMdBKXVdsmKw==>
show that just 9 percent of students in the class of 2017 who came from
low-income families, whose parents did not go to college, and who identify as
black, Hispanic, American Indian or Pacific Islander are strongly ready for
college.

But the readiness rate for students with none of those demographic
characteristics was six times as high, 54 percent, according to data released
Thursday."That kind of shocked us," ACT chief executive Marten Roorda said. "We
knew it was bad, but we didn't know it was this bad." The analysis of
"underserved learners" was a first for the ACT, which is one of two major tests
students can take to apply to college. The other is the College Board's SAT.
