"Building Sustainable  Communities: The Challenge of the 21st 
Century" a talk by Shakoor Aljuwani  partner, Cooperative Development 
Institute and Chairperson, Coop Life. Shakoor will be the keynote 
speaker at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) Annual Meeting 
on Thursday evening, April 14, 5:30 - 7 pm, in the GIAC Gymnasium 
(corner of Albany and Court).

  A donation of $10 is requested, and hearty hors d'oeuvres will be 
served. Free childcare will be provided, and all are welcome.

Shakoor is  a long-time community organizer whose work has focused on 
grassroots leadership development and civic participation in 
disenfranchised, inner-city communities. He is currently working to 
develop a federation of cooperatives in the Northeast U.S. as one 
solution to the problems of depressed inner cities and rural areas.

Shakoor Aljuwani has more than thirty years of experience in 
community, labor and political organizing in Buffalo, New York; New 
York City and many other areas of the country.  He is the outgoing 
Director of the United Neighborhoods, a unique community building 
initiative that works toward real, systemic, and permanent change in 
the neighborhoods of Buffalo and Erie County.  Shakoor has been 
instrumental in developing a network of almost six hundred block 
clubs and public housing tenant councils working together in the city 
of Buffalo.  He has played a key role in developing a 
community-building model that focuses on grassroots leadership 
development, asset based community development strategies with the 
creative use of technology to expand the capacity and effectiveness 
of neighborhood leaders.  Additionally, Shakoor has been the catalyst 
in the formation of hundreds of people organizations.  He has 
assisted in the organization of all types of community-based 
organizations such as community technology centers, block clubs, 
tenant councils, credit unions, food coops, fuel coops, worker coops, 
environmental justice organizations, youth groups, grassroots 
political caucuses, and more.  Shakoor is currently completing a 
Masters Degree in Community Economic Development at Southern New 
Hampshire University.  

Shakoor is currently a partner at Cooperative Development Institute 
specializing in developing co-operative solutions to the problems of 
depressed inner cities throughout the Northeast.  He is also the 
chairperson of Coop Life a federation of cooperatives operating in 
the Northeast US. He is the father of three young adults with seven 
grandchildren.

This will be an informal seminar, with a chance to hear about 
Shakoor's work and engage in conversation, based on the interests of 
those attending. He is an extremely thoughtful, inspiring speaker 
whose work on civic participation and inclusion addresses issues that 
many action researchers struggle with.

The Cornell Participatory Action Research Network (CPARN) is a 
diverse group of students, faculty and other practitioners who share 
a commitment to promoting high standards of intellectual and social 
integrity in doing research for social change.
