Are you redirecting the desktop using Folder Redirection, by any chance?

Has anyone ever seen, if you have a windows XP box setup for Offline
Files to sync with a network server, the desktop icons rearrange
themselves after reconnecting to the network and performing a sync
First off, the icons all disappear when the notice pops up about needing
to sync once connected. Then, once you hit the ok button to sync, all
of the icons disappear off the desktop. If you hit refresh, they are
all arranged "grid" style, totally destroying the way that you had your
icons setup before the sync
