[gps-talkusers] GlobalSat verses RoyalTek and Holux receivers

Almost all these new receivers use the same Sirf Star 3 chipset.
The point about WAAS is this. Most of the Sirf Star 3 receivers, including the
BlobalSat, have WAAS. The question is whether or not the WAAS is enabled. When
I tested the BlobalSat 338 and 339, you had to enable WAAS via computer
software, and as soon as you turn the receiver off, the WAAS is once again
disabled. The same was true with the off the shelf Holux receivers. The reason
WAAS is disabled is because it saves battery life.
So, if you are using any of these models with a BrailleNote or Trekker, there
is no way to turn WAAS on. What good is a feature if you can't turn it on?
We arranged with Holux to burn a special version of the firmware so the WAAS
would be turned on by default so the BrailleNote could take advantage of it.
Since Trekker only works with the receivers in its menu, it hasn't been
possible to use the Holux with it, only with the BrailleNote.
I have heard from one GlobalSat 338 user that he thinks WAAS is enabled but
that wasn't my experience when I tested it a year or so ago. I don't know if
Trekker has a way of telling the user that WAAS is enabled or not but of course
the Sendero GPS software does on the BrailleNote.
Gavin, this is all a mute point for you in the UK because Egnos, the equivalent
of WAAS in the U.S., is not yet activated in the UK or Europe. However, there
is a signal on the frequency so the receivers will tell you WAAS or Egnos is
present even though it isn't yet providing any benefit. You might as well get a
receiver with active WAAS/Egnos for the day when it is turned on.
Furthermore, there is some debate about the real value of WAAS even when it is
active. The bottom line for me is that I'll take whatever improved accuracy I
can get. Hence, we had the WAAS enabled on the Holux. We continue to test other
receivers so we can offer users the best accuracy possible as new technology
emerges. So far, the Sendero Holux version in our opinion is the best receiver
to use with the BrailleNote.
And yes, having a slide switch on the Holux or RoyalTech is a good idea.
