Rick,

Nice to have you aboard. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I've been a 
bit under the weather. Your experience as a programmer could indeed be 
useful. Most of the people who will be working on this project have only 
limited time, so this is not a problem.

If you got a message saying that your post to the list had bounced, this 
is a problem with the e-mail system. Your message came through just fine.

For now, you might like to look at the Gnome desktop environment for 
Unix-like systems and its support for Java.
