Wow, Bernie, sounds like a big pain. And that whole business of the tech
support and other outsourcing to India is a big topic with us and our
friends, since everyone's in the field that's getting hurt by it.

Whoops, I gotta go now. We're helping my in-laws move today. See you
tomorrow.

Susan

Subject: [GeoStL] Computer problem

-
Susan,I suspected a virus for many weeks, but I scan weekly and pretty
well keep up with the updates. I use AVG. It all started may weeks ago
when once a day I would get an error message telling me that my window
files have changed and to stick my XP disc in to the CD drive. Every time
I did that, the computer would not accept the product code, so finally I
called Microsoft yesterday and in the process of speaking with 4 diff
"tech support" people, they kept giving me a different key, none of which
worked. The last key they gave me, the guy guaranteed me it would work.
He was half right. It startes to reinstall widows and we signed off.
Problem is, it hung up while it was installing the network files at 32
min to go. I called back and they could not help me. They said I needed
the 98 startup disk, but since it is a ripped copy, I told them that I
did not have it anymore. I asked her if I could borrow someons copy and
she said yes. The final thing she said was to take the puter to a puter
store and have them save my files and then do a fresh install. Trouble is
none of them know anything and they just read out of a book. If my
problem is not in the book, then I'm screwed. She was in India. When I
power down and then back up, it goes right back in to the Win install. I
sure hate to lose all my files and pictures etc. When it comes to backing
up, I'm not the greatest. Bernie.

About Bernie's PC problems, I was asking my hubbie about the method with
the
FX program and the cable, because he's a computer guy from way back. I
haven't been following your discussion with Bernie, so maybe I missed
this
info, but he said to be sure that Bernie's problems weren't caused by a
virus, or you may end up infected yourself. You know me, I'm not real
computer savvy, so I'm just passing along the caution message.

Otherwise, I'll see you both tomorrow. Is there any reason why weather
would affect what we're doing? I'm assuming rain or shine (but no hail).
Anything I should bring besides gps and a little notebook?

Susan
