The method of displaying rotation has never been changed, as far as I am aware.

I was never aware of this setting so it must have been set on for a long time 
and then
turned off at some point. The status seems to be remembered between 
invocations.
What can I do to force it to always be on? In the 
~.config/geeqie/geeqierc.xml file there is
the line:
This option used to be hidden away in Edit/Preferences.
At the time I moved the option to the status bar, I was scanning old slides. 
Sometimes I scanned the slides the wrong way round, and being able to quickly 
flip between mirrored and non-mirrored view sometimes helped me decide which 
was correct.


I tried setting this to true, but even so, if the option is turned off and 
Geeqie exited, it
remembers the off position and restores that later. Any way to make this 
permanent?
It cannot be permanently disabled, but you can remove the icon from the 
status bar via Edit/Preferences/Toolbar Status.
