Due to privacy rules, I had to remove personally-identifiable information
from the document, including peoples' names. But I'll be sure to give a big
shout out to everyone that has supported this idea since March, and helped
bring it to the attention of our decision makers!
In other good news, I received an email today from the Downtown Kitchener BIA
– our application for a Community Builder Grant has been approved! This will
give us much-needed funding to plan a pop-up park on Gaukel Street in
September. I'm so excited to show our neighbours what's possible when we turn
a road into space for people!
We will hear back from the #LoveMyHood placemaking grant application shortly.

They will be discussing Kitchener's new strategic plan at the same meeting,
which will include priorities around environmental leadership and safe
transportation. Gaukel Greenway fits well into both of those themes!
Also on the agenda is our City's response to the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission calls to action. If you can stay for the whole thing, it looks
like they'll be discussing lots of important decisions.
Our presentation will be the first item on the agenda. If you can, please
attend the meeting. The more people who show up, the more likely it is that
council will support the request.
Thanks for your support so far, we are so close to getting Gaukel Greenway
on the table!
We have received support so far from: Ward 1 councillor Scott Davey, Ward 8
councillor Margaret Johnston, Ward 9 councillor Debbie Chapman, Ward 10
councillor Sarah Marsh, and Mayor Berry Vrbanovic. Only need one more to
make it a majority :)
I am meeting with Ward 2 councillor Dave Schnider on Wednesday June 12th,
if anyone would like to join me for that meeting, let me know.
To recap, this is our request that we want council to approve:
That council direct Transportation Services and Economic Development staff
to:
1. Ensure Gaukel Street remains closed to motor vehicles between Charles and
King, immediately after Charlie West construction equipment is removed
(estimated Nov 2019)
2. Form an ad-hoc Gaukel Greenway working group including staff, residents,
business owners, and arts & culture representatives.
3. Develop a parking access plan to Hall’s Lane for 185 King Street West
(Pizza Pizza) and 191 King Street South (PUC Building)
4. Make Gaukel Greenway a regular bookable event space through Kitchener
Events.
Let's make Gaukel Greenway happen!
