I did it the following way
Click on Systems / Preferences / Network connections
You will see Wired / Wireless Mobile broadband / VPN / DSL
If BSNL has given you a modem with the User name and passowrd set in it,
then you have nothing to do. Just power up you modem and on the top bar
you will see the Network connection. Left click and select Auto ethO .
You will be connected without any hassles.
If BSNL gave you a modem with PPOE mode then, Select DSL and then click
on the ADD button. Change the name of the connection or by default DSL
Connection 1 will appear. Give the Username and the Password as given by
BSNL. You can leave the Service empty too. Verify by placing a tick mark
on the show password. Click on Apply and close.
Now power up your modem and on the top bar you will see the Network
connection. Left click and select DSL Connection 1. You will be
connected without any hassles.
This was how i got connected to the net on BSNL Braodband connection in
Ubuntu 9.10
Hope this gets you over the problem
