No matter where you live, call in on this one. If you didn't read the
article about this legislation in Newsday a week or so ago, Pat Young
touches lightly on it here in his appeal. As you read on you will see the
ramifications this will have across the board. Our economy is bad. This
legislation is bound to make it much worse. Farmingdale Citizens for Viable
Solutions belongs to Long Island Immigrant Alliance. It is a group that
advocates for justice for immigrants across Long Island.

The LIIA Legislative Committee met yesterday to discuss the new
anti-immigrant bill in Suffolk I.R. 1105. Unlike previous measures, which
were largely symbolic, this bill could lead to thousands of firings of
Latino workers in Suffolk. It is extremely urgent that it be defeated. A
similar measure was included in a cocktail of anti-immigrant legislation in
Oklahoma which has led to mass dislocation within that state's LEGAL
immigrant population.
LIIA is working with various organizations including Long Island Wins to put
together an analysis of the bill, a schedule of press events, and a
legislative strategy. We are currently looking for religious leaders,
homeowners and business people willing to participate in a press event.If
you know someone who would like to be part of our press work, please contact

The campaign will include focuses on the impact on homeowners and on
business, as well as our usual messages. Since some unions are lining up
against us, we also need union support to counterbalence the impression that
this is us against the labor movement. If your union is opposed to the bill,
please let Luis know as soon as possible.
We hope to kill the bill in the Consumer committee. We ask that you call AND
e-mail the following committee members and tell them that you are against
I.R. 1105: Browning, Mystal, Barraga, and Nowick. We also ask that everyone
call Bill Lindsay, the Presiding Officer of the legislature and express
opposition.

There are several different messages to use during these calls. Pick the one
you feel applies best to you:
-This bill is just pandering to hatred. It is divisive and hurts relations
in Suffolk.
-The bill will increase discrimination against Latino immigrants living
legally in the U.S.
-This bill is bad for business and will reduce the country's
competitiveness.
-This bill will make it impossible for homeowners to get work done.
Although we will send more messaging information over the coming days,
please begin making calls now. We need to make sure that legislators know
there is significant opposition to the bill.
We are calling for a full mobilization at the committee hearing where the
bill will first be discussed. Keep Feb. 28 open as the hearing date. We will
send you more info on when to arrive, etc. in coming days. Another
mobilization will take place on March 4 when the full legislature has a
hearing on the bill. The bill may be voted on March 18. Again, we will send
more info over the coming days.
Finally, this fight may be the toughest one we have had so far. The bill is
extremely dangerous and its defeat would show the anti-immigrant groups that
their victories last year have not left us prostrate. Begin talking about
this hateful piece of legislation with everyone you know. We believe we can
beat it, but it will take a lot of heavy lifting.
