I can't think of a way to do this directly (yes I agree it is an obvious thing you would want to do), but here is a work around: Turn on the volume envelope and set the delay, attack, decay, sustain and release so you only hear the part of the sample you want. Of course, you'd have to trigger the sample early in the piano roll or step sequencer. Alternatively, you could trigger early and automate the volume. What I'd like to be able to do is set "anchor" points in the samples, like you can in logic audio, so that the sample snaps to this point and not the beginning of the trigger. This combined with being able to play from a specified start point would be very cool.
