Well, "we" are not all attending Alumni College.  Stewart Davey and his wife, Kelly Hamilton, are the only ones among us attending.

Lola was a department store mannequin that somehow found its way into the house -- sort of the first female Rudd.  She arrived before we did (class of '66); perhaps Oliver Seely ('61) might know something about her, since he was there from the start of the house.  Anyway, Lola had been rather brutally made "anatomically correct", and became the prize for inter-ally challenges.  The winning ally got to keep Lola until the next challenge and defend her virtue, such as it was.

As for the flaming gin, this was a show put on at mixers and dances where one brave Rudd (Wally Oliver was the master flamer in our class) would take a shot glass of gin, set fire to it, and then with the lights out hold it above his head and pour it, hopefully into his mouth, then gargle flames for a few seconds before swallowing the shot.  That's if all went well; if he missed his mouth or spilled flaming gin, other students were standing by with moist towels to put out the fire before it could do much damage.

Then there were "crew races", which had nothing to do with rowing, but instead involved beer.  But that's another story.

Hi.  So glad you all are attending Alumni College.  I?ll have to make a point to get together with all of you next time you?re together and treat you to lunch or cocktails at the Ath.

I?m intrigued by Lola and the flaming gin;)  If you can divulge a non-Rudd, what is/was Lola?  In the meantime, I?ll try to locate the portrait of Mr. Ruddock.

Greetings Wally!  Turns out Stewart Davey and Kelly are visiting us right now, about to attend the Alumni College program tomorrow and Saturday.  We'll have a toast to Frinks and Lola tonight, but not with flaming gin :-)

Cheers,

Al

Maybe Lola II could be a class of '66 gift to the House.

As to a symbol, there is the portrait of Mr. Ruddock that may still exist.  We are one of the classes that actually had an opportunity to meet him in person and to receive the portrait from him.

Lola, of course, but she may have disappeared before the memory of most Ruds.
