For now the important thing is establishing a link to the Internet from the warehouse. In the future we will need a completely segregated mesh network for the neighborhood networks and a dedicated wired or fiber internet connection as well. I think OpenMesh might work nicely for the neighborhood networks.

I agree with openmesh being nicely priced.
There are ways of doing similar things as openmesh in ddwrt. Just takes time and research to make it as safe as openmesh and the now cisco valet routers (which is not the same as a mesh, it just creates 2 seperate networks one open and one secured wpa)

I've looked at OpenMesh as well and I would like to try that some time. I don't think the Linksys routers are compatible with the OpenMesh software since they use Broadcom chips. I think you can do mesh networking with dd-wrt however. We will at least be able to get our feet wet this way. We can discuss the particulars on Thursday.

Glad to hear you are working on this. I’ve looked at commercially available mesh networking equipment and software, OpenMesh in particular (http://www.open-mesh.com/). OpenMesh hardware is reasonably priced and includes wireless network management software and outdoor (weatherproof) gear.

Thanks Tony.

I have 2 wireless G routers and am just started working on getting dd-wrt on them and doing some antenna mods to see if we can get a usable wifi connection from across the street. Hopefully this will also give us some experience with long range wifi and help with our goal of community networks.

I'm sorry I haven't pursued DSL. I assumed that the $14.95 price was for residential service which probably wouldn't apply for FGM since we are a business. That may be an option we will need to consider if wifi doesn't work out

Regarding no internet connection, I sent an email a while back about AT&T DSL being only $14.95/mo for the first year and didn't get any feedback on it. They still have this rate available. I looked back at some of the old discussions and Tom mentioned there was already telco wiring in the warehouse so the installation fees probably wouldn't be too bad. Is this something we should pursue?

Yes, I can. However, without internet access, there will be difficulty in identifying some of the video cards or RAM. Sure, it's one thing to look at a video card and determine it is either AGP or PCI, and most cases, who manufactured it. But it's another to know its memory capacity, because not all the video cards we have identify whether it's say 32 MB or 256 MB. Same goes for RAM, it's not always labeled as to what it is.

Can you train our volunteers to do any of these tasks?

Just ask Phil, I know pretty much the levels of everything. We have plenty of AGP video cards, but it would probably be best to go through them and also sort them by memory size, and I'd say anything that is less than 32 MB goes to recycling. Also, the tote that holds the AGP cards is pretty much overflowing. We're low on PCI sound cards and video, so we can build up stock on those. We're okay on hard drives, and we're very well set on optical drives. I think we're okay on keyboards, mice are always nice to have. The major thing we need is RAM, since most of the systems use DDR or newer RAM, with a few RAMBUS machines.  We may need to resort RAM, as it's all gotten mixed up, and the ancient RAM that we use for keychain fobs should be set aside in boxes, recycled, or perhaps invest in buying keyrings and putting the RAM on there, then selling them.

Yes, it really is that simple.

Discussions about what to do with surplus are ongoing. At the moment we don't have a great deal to send to eBay but that could easily change when we start getting more donations. We have a lot of ancient and/or broken laptops that we need to get rid of after the hard drives are either destroyed or wiped. We need to make a decision about what to do with these. I am working at determining minimum/maximum stock levels for various components.
