:: LTSP Problem

LTSP workstations and FreeBoxes could not obtain IPs from the LTSP server. The DHCPD daemon was running. So we did network troubleshooting.

It turns out that the two ethernet interfaces don't initialize properly. The outside (eth0) interface seems ok, but the LAN interface (eth1) has a problem. Rebooting the server several times seemed to fix the problem.

Goose plans to install the accounting server next week. He will put additional ethernet cards in it and use it as the DHCP server, which is OK at the warehouse. But what are we going to do at the lab? We want to run LTSP on VL 5.8 there.

:: Hubs and Switches

Goose installed a switch with a noisy fan in the server rack so we have something more robust than the little SOHO switch we were using. Mike installed new fans in another rack mount switch. We'll swap them next week.

:: LTSP Shutdown Problem

The Vector Linux desktop is designed as a single user system and wasn't really intended to be used as an LTSP server. This presents a serious problem if a user clicks on the "restart" or "shutdown" button instead of the "log out" button. Since all user sessions are actually running on the server, the shutdown or restart buttons will shutdown or restart the server.

Not a good thing.

I unsuccessfully tried to find the script called by the gui shutdown and restart buttons. So I searched the VL forums. No better luck there.

:: Possible Non-Profit Consulting

Andrew's uncle is on the board of a non-profit which needs a web site and secure patient records online. Andrew thinks FGM might be able to consult with the non-profit or actually do some of the work. I will call his uncle and arrange to talk to someone in management.

:: Tanya's FreeBox

I delivered the keyboard and mouse to Tanya and set up her FreeBox. Her kids were all over it!

The kids use Apple computers at school so there will be problems transferring school work between the two systems. The file systems are different, and Apple applications use proprietary data formats -- Microsoft isn't the only player on the Dark Side, just the biggest. Even so, the VL FreeBox read an Apple floppy, although slowly. None of the VL applications could open any of the Apple files. However, Abiword saved several versions of a file (.abw and .rtf) to the floppy and reopened them with no problems.
