Tech Notes, 5/12/04

.: LTSP Training

I suggested to Jay, Mike and Terry that we hold a LTSP installation demonstration quarterly for our volunteers and others.

Our core volunteers haven't installed a LTS network in quite a while. We need to stay fresh. There is no telling when one of my thin-client/server proposals will hit.

Will someone (Goose?) with a big pipe download the latest K12LTSP distro and burn CDs for me? I will use the disks to practice the install and give the first demo.

.: Distro Madness

We are still in limbo re moving to one distro for everything. Which is to say we use VL on FreeBoxes, K12LTSP (Fedora Core) for FreeLabs and we are experimenting with Debian/LTSP.

At some point Debian NP, the official Debian project to create a distro suited to non-profits, will be ready for prime time. Debian NP is collaborating with the Scandinavian SkoleLinux project. SkoleLinux is developing a distro for schools using LTSP technology. So NP looks promising.

But, until Debian NP is good enough, we will be supporting VL and K12LTSP in the field.

.: Give'em What They Ask For

FreeBox recipients ask for, in the following order, a:
. modem
. printer
. sound card and speakers
. collection of games

Mike is compiling and testing games on a VL 3.2 test box. His goal is to produce a CD collection of lightweight and entertaining games which run well on FreeBoxes. The games will be relatively easy to install. Mike will use CheckInstall to turn the games into Slackware (VL) packages.

Does anybody remember where the global config files are for IceWM? Mike needs to know.

Tom
