WIRELESS ACCESS IN MOLLOY ROOM

Issue resolved.

Chuq and I brought wireless routers. We tested approximately 12 Ethernet jacks in the Molloy room. Only 2 worked. Chuq's router couldn't obtain an IP. Mine did. The signal strength and speed were excellent.

VIDEO PROJECTION ON VECTOR LINUX

Mike, Fr. Robert and Chuq worked on forcing X windows to send video output to the external VGA port. It seems that distros tend to not contain one of the two utilities required to make this happen: xvattr and xrandr. Vector Linux comes with xrandr but not xvattr.

Mike brought a Compaq Evo n600c laptop with Ubuntu. Chuq brought his Evo n600c with VL 6.0. Mike got his Evo laptop working first, then Mike and I walked Chuq through downloading and installing xvattr and checkinstall. Checkinstall substitutes for "make install" when compiling from source. Checkinstall allows you to make a package (tgz, rpm, deb) which you then install, upgrade or remove with the system's built-in package manager. While we compiled xvattr from source code, Mike found a Slackware binary.

Long story short, the FGM presentation laptop now projects video to the VGA port. We tested the presentation laptop on NEC and Optoma projectors; both worked perfectly. Chuq took the FGM projector home to test different video formats and sources we might use in presentations.

The research Mike, Fr. Robert and Tony did has paid off. Mike and I will write up a howto page for the FGMLUG web site which will incorporate the research sources and our experience.

NEXT FGMLUG MEETING

/Wednesday, July 8/
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Molloy Room

Fr. Robert proposed that we allow ourselves the rest of the summer to build a FreeBox oriented LUG, and, if we are not successful, switch to a more general LUG format. The consensus was to focus on marketing to FreeBox recipients through August and review our progress in September.
