One more contribution to the discussion on "Dinners".

I too have been involved with major Gala type Dinners which have
contributed to multi-million dollars campaigns and I agree with Pam ! The
key is to use the Gala as a strategic component of a fund raising campaign.

The Gala Dinners give high profile donors important recognition when
coupled with :

   - Major Pledges in advance of the event
   - Corporate and Supplier tables
   - High value ad book
   - High profile speaker or entertainment

These elements can result in major sums of money, although a dinner alone
will rarely bring in enough beyond the cost to justify a half year of staff
time. Packaged properly with honorees making serious pledges in advance of
the event can result in high net returns.

For the past 4 years, I have been coordinating "Briefings" or "Parlor
Meetings" in donors' homes.  Unlike dinners, that involve much more time
in planning and have financial risk, these smaller events typically draw 25
– 30 people.

The key is identifying a suitable host(s)  He / she should be well
connected, devoted to your organization, and have a home that can
accommodate the anticipated attendance.

In short, you will help the host(s) develop an invitation that will be
delivered by email to his / her friends, neighbors, and other prospective
donors.  Your organization will provide an hour long program that
resonates with the anticipated group.  There should be ample time for
socializing over lite refreshments before and after the program.

Please can I have your input/comment on the pros and cons of Dinners.  WE
are considering doing one for our organization, and want to assess whether
it will be a money maker or not.

Is there another advantage to a Dinner besides generating income?  (e.g.
Getting your community of donors together, etc)
