I'm afraid that I don't understand the question.
If you are asking me if OSI's PI is a useful product, the answer is, "It
must be because a large number of people use it and seem to be happy users
at that."
If you are asking me if the AIM*OPC Server should be used with OSI's PI, my
answer is, "You may use it, but I prefer the standard OSI PI data collector
for the I/A Series because it buffers the data on the AW in the event of a
network failure."
If you are asking me if AIM*AT Suite is sufficient to your needs, I can only
say that, "There are a number of customer who have only AIM*AT Suite and do
not have PI and seem to be happy with what what it does."
If you are asking me if AIM*DataLink can be used with PI Client
applications, the answer is, "If the application can use DDE, it can work
with AIM*DataLink."
If you are asking me if I prefer AIM*DataLink or the AIM*OPC Server, my
answer would be, "It depends on the client. If the client supports both DDE
and OPC, I'd go with OPC since it is widely used with many other client
applications."
Did I come anywhere near your question?

The problem with the OPC Server approach though is that it does not
buffer
data locally on the AW in the event of a network failure. PI's native
collector does. I think that makes it much more valuable.

Both products you mention are supported on I/A series.
PI is supported through OSI, they provide the piclient/piapi interface
that
works with FoxAPI.
OPC Server is available from on NT/XP platforms. OPC Server
functionality is
achieved on 50 Series systems by adding a 70 Series box to your
configuration.
