Oops, forgot to ask, what is MBR; Master Boot Record?  What has to be
restored?  I am confused about this one...

A good way to eliminate this is to copy the image to a USB drive and try
again.  This eliminate all network issues.  Make sure you restore the
MBR when restoring on the C drive.

Sure sounds like a subtle network issue. I would look at everything
related to that, such as subnet mask et all
