Dear List: I got something new in this matter: I have avoided the crashes by converting the "corrupted" display to ".g" and back to ".fdf", and deleting the previous outputted files (dedit.log and whereused.txt). *.- The "Dedit -where" command always crashes in the same Display (I can see the progress in the whereused.txt file) and leave an ".m1" zero size garbage file with the name of the display where it fails. *.- When I tried to open the same display with the dedit GUI from foxdraw, I got the same error message. *.- I tried to get the output file where I want to, by using shell environment: "dedit -where /opt/displays/ > /opt/wu_report.txt" but it contains only information about the dedit software manufacturer, and generates the same WhereUsed.txt File where I running the application. They are a more powerful version of the DOS batch (.bad, .cmd files). This is one of the reasons Windows/DOS was referred to as "baby UNIX" in the old days. The most common is the Bourne shell script. Any UNIX command you can enter from the command line, you can run in a shell script. There are many books for shell scripting available on-line, as well as many Foxboro examples available on your boxes. The MKS shell emulator on new Foxboro Windows boxes provide you same shell script capability the older UNIX boxes had. I created a shell script which calls dedit and then moves the file to = =3D the desired directory (as would have been specified with the -wuout =3D argument. Also we had crashes of dedit in the past but were always able to =3D pinpoint this to a corrupted display file or a display which contained 'off =3D screen elements'. Normally it's very robust. In our case it runs on a daily base to =3D retrieve all display linking on hundreds of displays. Kind regards, Patrick Martens Total Raff. Ned.
