Jim and Brian, We haven't heard that rumor but it wouldn't be surprising to us. Our plan has been to migrate all of our controllers, associated boot hosts, and Foxboro applications from nodebus/carrierband to Ver.8.X but leaving our older Sun WP51 boxes at Ver.6.2.1 on a nodebus that is connected to the MESH via ATS. In this way we will continue using DM's and remote DM's to meet our display needs without having to pay new license fees for DM?/Foxview at Version 8.x. I would consider paying new license fees for an HMI, if the HMI functionality actually provided some new value to the operators that are the primary users today. Both the DM and Foxview, are extremely limited in functionality by the fact that they can only display data from the Global Object Manager Data-set. The potential to develop an HMI that allows users to access relational data from other sources such as the many fieldbus, asset management, instrument, and process optimization databases and applications would be a major improvement in an HMI and would open up a new HMI user database in the ranks of plant based engineers, managers, and maintenance personnel that could use the HMI for planning, scheduling and maintenance. Today, Foxboro is spending more effort on creating ECB's and control blocks to transform data into Global Object variables. My prediction is that it will be quicker and easier for 3rd parties to push-and-pull the needed object manager data to and from the Foxboro system and integrate it into a more flexible HMI environment, as opposed to Foxboro creating ECB/blocks that transform all those external data-sets into object manager variables that can be displayed via DM/Foxview! We continue to hear about an improved HMI that will come from the Wonderware ranks and I am anxious to see it, but the potential is for other companies, using accepted browser based technologies and enabled databases, to provide an HMI that can meet user needs for many different control systems. If Wonderware wasn't already focused on a broader market than the Fox IA HMI they would be in serious trouble. The HMI portion of their work will need to plug and play with multiple systems, even with Foxboro's competitors if they are going to make any money at it. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out over the next few years. At any rate, I think that both DM and Foxview's days are numbered so why pay more money than you have to on them? This morning I heard that 8.2 is (or will be) compatible with FoxView = =3D only. Is it true that DM is not an option on IA v8.x? Is there a documented "end of life" for DM? -Regards, Brian Bates.
