So configured in this way, acking the compound will acknowledge any subordinate 
block and cause the LED to go solid?

This alarm ack feature on the button of annunciator keyboard didnt work well 
for me either.
On my case, i used to acknowledge by compound present in the display. but still 
it took form 6 to 10 seconds to callup the display.
On my experience it took about a second to acknowledge each compound.
I know it doesnt help but is just to point out that is not related to not 
finding a block exclusively
