You might consider looking at the Alarm Shelving Tool. You can get the PSS here: http://resource.invensys.com/iaseries/pss/pss2/start.asp?xml=pss.xml&xsl=wksta.xsl It has an "update" flag so it's easy to see. INHIB is connectable and settable INHALM is connectable and settable You can see a detail display (Foxboro standard display) for the AIN block - Alarms where you can see the difference between the INHIB and the INHALM parameters but basically INHIB suppresses all alarm message while INHALM is a packed boolean where you specify a pattern that can selectively supppress the messages from some or all of the various alarms in the block. Only one parameter needs to be TRUE to inhibit messages but both must be FALSE to get an alarm message. I believe that there are Invensys and third party applications that will suppress alarm messages based on specific input conditions. So if a pump is to be taken out of service and you can expect 20 alarms while that pump is gone, you can set up the program to suppress these 20 messages perhaps based on Operator (Maintenance) input or zero flow switch (for example). The logic itself will take a large amount of work to determine and usually must pass through a Management of Change committee so that the process safety can be assurred. Programms that I worked on write (hex) to the INHALM parameter. Maintenance staff who had access to the Foxboro detail display used the INHIB parameter whenever they needed to suppress alarms while they worked on transmitters, etc. Run some internet searchs on Alarm Management to see options.
