Try mobaxterm
You can connect from windows to unix by ssh and it comes with built in xserver,
meaning you can use the windows screen to run normal graphical unix apps.
And it's free.

RealVNC is the one I most commonly hear about with those older Unix stations

Sounds like Xming or Cygwin/X would be the thing to use. I think PuTTY works in
conjunction with the X software to make it more secure.
