Hi everybody, This mailing list, <foxboro@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, is slated to be changed to <foxboro@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> effective Monday, October 1, 2001. [All time referenced is US Eastern time. I apologize if you're on the other side of the world, please allow for the discrepancy accordingly.] Late Sunday night, Sept. 30, I'll switch the list server from the current one run by Warren Michelsen to a new server. All subscribers to the current foxboro list as of Sept. 30 will be migrated to the new list automatically. In other words, if you're a current subscriber, you will be moved to the new list without having to do anything. Since there's enough of a change in the way the new list is run as well as a new set of list administrivia commands, each subscriber will receive a new welcome message. The new mailing list is hosted at FreeLists (www.freelists.org), a technology-related free mailing list hosting site. The list software is the open-source Listar mailing list software (www.listar.org) with impressive flexibility. For example: * instead of reacting to the return-receipt mail problems, we'll be able to filter and bounce messages that request delivery and read notifications * digest capability: user-selectable digest mode or regular mode; Listar even supports an enhanced digest mode where one can receive both individual messages _and_ the digest mailings. * vacation mode: user-settable flag to halt delivery of messages while on vacation without having to unsubscribe. Upon returning, you 'unset' the vacation flag to resume. * web interface for subscribers to manage their subscription * capable of stripping HTML and attachments (MIME or malicious or otherwise) from messages * on-line archive of list messages * searchable archive * multiple list admins, if necessary Listar will give us all the options to configure the list to our needs. In fact it has many more options than I can figure out at this time. Starting on Monday, Oct. 1, to post a message to the new list, send mail to: <foxboro@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> And for all admin requests, send an e-mail to: <foxboro-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> and include the appropriate command(s). The most commonly-used ones are: subscribe to subscribe unsubscribe to unsubscribe set digest to switch to digest mode unset digest to switch the digest mode off set vacation to temporarily stop receiving messages unset vacation to resume receiving messages commands to receive a "cheat sheet" of commands faq for a list of frequently-used commands end to stop command processing Single command can be put in the Subject: line, in which case any commands included in the body will NOT be processed. Multiple commands go in the body, with an 'end' command to stop processing. Currently the list at freelists.org is closed -- nobody can subscribe to it yet. I want to have an orderly transfer on Sunday night. Feel free to visit the freelists.org web site, but you won't be able to sub/unsub or change your settings until Monday. I appreciate your patience. Many thanks to Warren for hosting the foxboro list since its inception. We appreciate your continued support, Warren. Let me know of any question or concern you have. Duc M.
