Dear Michelle,
Several companies have recently submitted proposals to Florida regulators
asking for permission to drill for oil in the Everglades. One of these
applications is to explore the viability of drilling in a section of the
Everglades located in Broward County, a few miles from Miramar.
This well would be located in the district represented by State Senator Jeremy
Ring. Ask Senator Ring to show true leadership by stopping fracking in its
tracks right now.
Because loopholes in state law allow drilling companies to use fracking
techniques to produce more oil and gas — with almost no oversight over the
chemicals being injected underground — South Florida could end up seeing a
fracking boom. That's why we need Senator Ring to take action. Urge Senator
Ring to introduce legislation that bans fracking and other harmful forms of
drilling in the state of Florida.
As you know, fracking is a terribly harmful and destructive new drilling
practice that has swept the country. Each fracked well requires large volumes
of water, mixed with toxic chemicals, that is then injected underground at high
pressures. Even before fracking takes place, the proposed Broward oil well
could involve drilling through the aquifer that provides drinking water for
millions of South Florida residents.
Communities across the country have banned fracking to avoid the possibility of
surface spills, aquifer contamination and the numerous negative health impacts
that come with fracking. Please ask Senator Ring to take a stand against
fracking by introducing a bill that guarantees that all of these risks will be
avoided by banning fracking altogether.
