ROTC reminds me of Terry Sager ... one of the guys I lived with at U of I. He
was rotc and from boondocks Illinois. He got a draft notice from boondocks so
he tried to tell them he was already enlisted ,,, they refused to hear him and
drafted him anyway ... I guess the army figured it out. Another roomie was a
psych major ... so after he was drafted, the army gave him the job of informing
draftees of their physical results. Another roomie (black guy) Arnold was so
scared of being drafted, he enlisted in the marines.

Thank you Karen. I do remember—because I am old --the mid 70s when guy and
gals came back from Viet Nam---no parade—no thanks-- no ceremony. Now our
National Guard goes to the border for a couple months and we send them off and
have a big ta do when they return. Oh and to get more officers in the
Army—not sure about the other branches---the colleges that offer ROTC—for 4
years now will allow you to serve six years in the guards instead of going
active duty for 2.They were not getting people to sign up for ROTC for all 4
years and this seems to be working. Don't blow away my friends as you are
accepting the thanks for serving. Pam From: fhs-65-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Subject: [fhs-65] VETERAN'S DAY A heart-felt THANK YOU to all veterans and
today especially to those of
you who are active in our egroup! I know we have Mike, Dave, Steve.
There's Roger but I don't think he follows us at all any more. Who am I
forgetting? Some of you gals have spouses who served also - and some
of us have children who have served. Many our age had dads who served in
World War II - for me it was uncles and good family friends. Anyone
have a grandchild serving? Please tell me if I'm missing egroup members
-- a big THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to you all. Mike, I believe you
usually took part in some ceremony or other on this day each year.
Anything planned this year? I enjoy seeing all the flags around town -
even some businesses have a display and FHS has a nice row of flags
along West Avenue and another along Empire which includes the flag for
each branch of service. Love seeing the patriotism on display! Many
restaurants offer free meals to Veterans today -- so please take
advantage and enjoy every bite. Veterans, any of you attending
ceremonies today???
Karen
